The Seattle store's former Outreach Coordinator and recent Tacoma location Store Manager, Michael Rives, has departed to become an oyster fisherman!** Masha Fikhman takes over as new Tacoma manager and although we will all miss Mike terribly, we know the Tacoma store is in good hands with Masha at the helm and are happy for Mike embarking on his new adventure!
**this is actually true.
The Wednesday afternoon drawing group will carry on although it will certainly never be the same without its original instigator Howard Hansen. We will miss him and will never forget his good humor, wonderful stories and magic way with a pencil. Pictured is Howard's obituary published in today's Seattle Times.

On display in the store is our ninth annual black light art show, located in the small room at the end of the clay sculpture materials aisle. Please go in and have a look. We hold this exhibition every October and always welcome people who wish to Glow up and fluoresce. If you're interested in participating, ask an A&C clerk for advice on materials. We'd love to help. The current show will probably remain on display through the first week of November.

Lora Martini is a local encaustic painter. She will discuss and demonstrate several encaustic paintings techniques and outline the materials needed to get started painting in this medium.
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface — usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can be used — some containing other types of waxes, damar resin, linseed oil, or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment. This painting medium is very versatile and physical kind of paint. It is unique in the way the paint interacts with the prior layers and in the way the color pigments is suspended allowing the light to reflect and creative a 3-d effect.
